This interview with scholar Carolyn Finney explains her research interests, African American experiences in the outdoors. Finney began to ask questions about land ownership and race in the US, which ultimately led her to research about the various ways that African Americans have been excluded from the mainstream environmental conversation, despite a rich history of deep connection with the environment. Robin DiAngelo discusses the concept white fragility, which refers to, “a state in which even a minimum amount of racial stress becomes intolerable, triggering a range of defensive moves.” DiAngelo’s work is often cited when explaining white reactions to issues surrounding race.

‘We need co-conspirators, not allies’: how white Americans can fight racism

In the wake of racial violence in 2015, activists call for white co-conspirators, not allies. Allyship implies a mutually beneficial benefit and support one another; however, one protestor argues that the black community is not obligated to support the white community.
