Researching local histories

For this assignment you will be asked to research some history relevant to communities in the place you live now or where you were raised and create either an 8 1/2 X 11 sheet or a slide to share with your peer learners.

  1. Research at least 1 historic fact and 1 current fact related to Indigenous peoples and their connections to land, water, and wildlife in the place you live now or where you were raised. You can use www.native-land.ca to start, though we encourage you to cross check the information you find with more local sources. Information coming from tribal websites or from members of that tribe is usually best. If there are conflicting stories, you can bring both stories to the group. Create a 8 ½ X 11 sheet or a slide in slide deck shared with your peer learners with relevant images and a summary of the information you researched.
  2. Research at least one event in the histories of other marginalized communities in the place you live now or where you were raised (e.g, non-Indigenous communities of color, working class communities, immigrants and refugees, LGBTQIA+ people, etc.). Try to find events that connect these communities history to land, water, wildlife and public spaces. Create a 8 ½ X 11 sheet or a slide in slide deck shared with your peer learners with relevant images and a summary of the information you researched.
